‘Good Hair’… we’ve all heard the term at one point in our lives.  I’ve heard this term all my life and even used to use it from time to time.  I, of course was brainwashed by society.  The term was even thrown around in my own home  and used by my parents.  Before I went natural, I used to look at my husband’s hair as ‘good hair’ – he hails from an African-American, Chinese and Dutch background.  He has soft hair, with these beautiful curls and I used to envy his wash and go’s…lol.  Then I went natural and looked at my own locs and didn’t know what to think.  There were no bouncy curls, no shine,  no baby hairs in sight and there was no such thing as a wash ‘n’ go for my hair.  But as time went on, I grew to love my kinky hair.  And although my hair is kinky and takes a little more work, I consider it GREAT HAIR!  It reminds me of an African Queen.  The very funny Chris Rock has put together a documentary that adrresses this subject, after one of his daughters came to him crying asking why SHE didn’t have good  hair?  I cannot wait to see this documentary and I know it will take time, but I cannot wait for these classifications that are set to divide the African-American community are dissolved.  Check it out…

I was not going to address this situation because I get angry every time I think about it.  The thing is I was a really big Chris Brown fan, before all this went down.  No, I do not know the facts of what went down that day, but I do know the facts of what her face looked like after the incident.  Anywho, I will go on no further with my opinion.  I thought this guy had some really interesting things to say.  Let me know what you think.

Your Make-Up Should Not Move!!

One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing a woman who’s dipped from head to toe and her eyeshadow is all over the place..UGH!!  Funny enough I went to MAC and one of the artists had on the prettiest eye color I’ve ever seen, but it was a hot mess!  There was creasing and bare skin peaking through.  I was cringing as I spoke to her.  Yes, I cringed.  Let me help you.  Here’s my video on the  best eyeshadow bases that can help with this beauty issue.  No moving allowed, ladies and gents!

I am too Proud for Words

I had a front row seat to the Inauguration of President Obama in my living room and I could not stop shouting and smiling thru the whole event.  I’m sure my new neighbors thhought I was off the wall, but who could blame me.  I really never thought I would see this in my lifetime.  But God, as usual, had other plans (smiling).

Oyin’s Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner

I am a professed make-up and beauty product junkie and I make no apologies for it (smile).  So on one of my product binges, I decided to order a sample packgage from Oyin’s Handmade.  Now to be honest, the products didn’t really stand out to me with the exception of their Honey Hemp Conditioner.  I first tried the condish as a deep treatment and it was okay  (a little light for my natural tresses), but as I read the description it could also be used as a detangler and leave-in.  WHOA MOMMA!!  I was so ever pleased.  This conditioner allowed me to actually get a comb thru these strands.  S0mething that wasn’t feasible in the past (well, not without some breakage) and and it smells divine.   The slip was amazing and the best part about it:  It has completely natural ingredients!!  I cannot live without this product.  Do check it out at Oyin’s Handmade online.  Don’t be afraid relaxed beauties, this product can do wonders for you as well.

There’s a simple answer to this question, however implementing it into your sex life is…. well, it’s as hard as you make it.  (Excuse the pun) 

Bringing back Passion and Romance are imperative to getting your “Sex Life Back on Track”.  Along with those two things must be adventure, spontaneity, being able to let your inhibitions go and last but not least, communication.  Yes I said communication!  You have to let more than your bodies do the talking, that’s why it’s OFF track now.  Ask your lover what he/she likes. It doesn’t have to be right before you do the act, but you could ask at dinner time, during a commercial break, even watching a porno together!  Talk about favorite positions, what time of day they prefer sex? what time of day they are at their sexual peaks? what turns them on? what fantasy would they like to act out?  Be prepared for unexpected answers and most of all try to keep an open mind.  This is for the both of you to enhance your love-making, so make it happen!  The more you know about your mate’s likes and dislikes, the higher the Pleasure-0-Meter raises leaving you guys both wanting more!!!

Keeping The Confidence

So, I am not waiting till next year to start project weight loss.  I’m starting from NOW!!!  I decided to get my act together on December 1st.  No, I am not obese or overweight (because some slow people are always like ‘why you losing weight’…shut up!), but I have packed on the pounds over the years.  I also have a condition called PCOS and the slimmer and healthier I am (not anorexic), the better chance I have of menstruating and ovulating more than once every 5 months.  If any of you have decided to lose weight or are in the process of losing weight and becoming healthier, please listen to this young lady.  She lost about 80 pounds and is such a cutie-pa-tutie.  She had me cracking up in this vid.  Stay motivated BrownFaces and kick the haters to the curb….

Giving Thanks

I asked some of you BrownFace Beauties to let me know what you are thankful for.  The way things are going now it is so easy to get discouraged.  I’m glad these beauties took the time to see that we are more blessed, than not.

Marsha I am thankful for life and for so many other things that I can’t begin to name.  This holiday season I am thankful for friends and family who have always been and inspiration to my life regardless of the circumstances because at the end of the day if God take you to it he will take you through it and I know he is preparing me for something bigger and better.

Mark Katrowitz, publisher of the financial aid assistance website, www.finaid.org reported as of Spring 2008, that 37 lenders had suspended all or part of their participation in federal loan programs. “In a sense, it’s a liquidity crisis,” he said. “If lenders can’t get funds from investors, they can’t make the loans. That’s why several of these lenders have left.” The suspension of these programs comes at a time when almost 9 million students applied for financial aid in the first half of 2008, nearly 1.3 million more than a year ago according to the U.S. Department of Education.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, at least 43 states will face shortfalls in their budgets for this and/or next year. As states aggressively cut their budgets, public colleges and universities receive less money, which inevitably leads to increases in college tuition. Fox News 16 in Little Rock, Arkansas reported that half a dozen states are considering mid-year tuition hikes, this on top of a 6.4% increase applied at the beginning of the school year.

With college retention rates disproportionately low for African American students, lack of financing increases the likelihood that many will have to leave college without obtaining a degree. As explained in USA Funds Education Access Report (2004), one of the number one factors affecting these students is strained finances. ACV, also known as Apple Cider Vinegar, has so many healthy and beauty benefits.  Of course we know that ACV can be used to clean and season meat.  I use it to cleanse my scalp and hair (use equal part water and vinegar).  ACV can also be used to help you lose up to 15 pounds per year without changing your diet or exercise routine.  Just add a few teaspoons to an 8oz. glass of water before every meal.  I just found a knew use for ACV which I’m gonna have to try.  It can be used to take musty smells out of those sweaters you just removed from storage.  All you  have to do is add one cup of vinegar to steaming bathtub water, hang your clothes on plastic hangers and put them on your shower rod, then close the door to allow the steam to penetrate.

If I Mention MAC One More Time…

Actually, this is not really about MAC (smile).  You guys know how I adore them and since I have my Pro Discount, I’ve really gone over the edge with items almost half off.  One of my favorite products are the MAC wipes.  Ever since I was able to take off super red lipstick without a trace, I’ve been hooked to these things. But after a few weeks, the wipes tend to dry out? Making it a little harder to use just one. I happened to stumble into Origins the other day (okay, I knowingly walked) and was investigating some new products for purchase when I receive my fat new paycheck, from my new fabulous job (Lord are you listening?).  There were two products that really caught my attention: one of them being Plantidote™ Mega-Mushroom Eye Makeup Remover Pads with Therapeutic Benefits.  OMG!!!  These pads came in a jar, not like the plastic foil that contain the MAC Wipes, so I think this aids in keeping them really wet.  I had make-up all over my hand and I was able to remove it with a single swipe!  You get 60 pads for $21.  I really need to go back and pick up a supply.  Again, as soon as I receive my fat new paycheck, from my new fabulous job! Karen’s Body Beautiful Re-visited

KBB was one of the very first lines I used when I first went natural.  I read so much about her Hair Milk (which made my t.w.a. very soft and supple) after my chop and the store was located in BK, so of course I ran out to test and buy some products.  It’s been two years since I’ve been natural and haven’t used any of her products since 2006 (partly because my husband used up all my stash before he started his locs – he never likes anything till I buy it…whaaa?).  My obsession with Youtube led me back to KBB and while I was in BK a couple of weeks ago, I decided to pick up an old staple and sample her shampoo (my hair is too dry for regular shampoos).  I love going to KBB because the customer service is great.  I ask alot of questions about a lot of things and I love the fact that the staff ddoesn’t get annoyed after my first 20 q’s…lol.  I went with the intent of purchasing the Hair Milk, but ended up leaving with some hair cream and a few samples.  Here are my thoughts on my longer 4b texture:

Hair Milk $16

“You’re only a few dabs away from lush, radiant, soft hair.  Karen’s Hair Milk moisturizes, detangles, defrizzes and softens your curls.  Excellent for natural hair styles, great for straightened styles before applying heat.  This leave in conditioner is light, non-greasy formula is ok for daily use on dry hair.  Apply a generous amount to hair when damp.  Also use to refresh and moisturize 2-3 times a week.”

Since my hair has grown out, my hair doesn’t like this product as much.  It is very moisturizing when you put it on and it is a very good detangler on wet or dry hair.  After a few minutes though, my hair was back to dry.  I still think it is a great product especially when you are starting out to make your curls pop!! If I still was relaxed, I would be buying this in bulk because it is great to moisturize those ends when you just want to bun it up or lay hair down.

Hair Cream $10

“Enriched with ingredients that stimulate hair growth and strengthen your hair shaft, Karen’s Hair Cream, moisturizes and adds sheen to dull, dry hair.  Excellent for natural, relaxed or pressed hair.  Use twice a week on hair and scalp or more as needed.”  

I’m surprised I purchased this again, because the first go round, my hair hated it because of the shea butter and oils (shea butter and most oils just sit on my hair, they don’t penetrate or moisturize when dry).  BUT!!!!  I found a new use for this product which is why I purchased it.  KBB is an all natural line, so alot of products can be used for different purposes. I didn’t have enough to purchase a jar of the regular body butter, but this works GREAT!!!!! My skin loves this stuff and it gives you a nice glow and a little goes a long way.  I will purchase this again, but for my skin.

Luscious Locks Moisturizing Hair Mask $25

“Conditioning doesn’t get deeper than this because everything you need for your hair is in this jar.  Detangle, soften, strengthen, grow.  Saturate your strands with this rich blend of herbs like shikakai and rosemary which are known to promote hair growth, arnica and nettle to strengthen your hair follicles and aloe for much needed moisture.  It is called Luscious Locks for a reason.  Usage: Once monthly.”

Okay I know the price on this may be steep for some of you, but THIS IS THE BEST DARN DEEP CONDITIONER ON EARTH!!!!!!  I had my first jar for over a year and you only need a little.  I just purchased another jar.

Shampoo and Conditioner ($12 and $16)

I got some samples of these products because I am on a quest for the perfect shampoo.  Let me tell you, these shampoo worked wonders.  Alot of shampoos claim to be very moisturizing, but this one is true to its word.  Again, I only used a small amount and I only had a sample.  So I will be purchasing once I get back on my feet.  The conditioner had the most amazing ‘slip’ which to me is hard to find in all natural products, as they don’t contain silicones.  Very good for detangling.  These two are a must try.  Please visit KBB online or visit her store if you are in the area.

When I saw the photo spread of Janelle Monae in the November issue of Essence, I almost passed out.  I LOVE BEAUTY!!!  You should already know this.  This has got to be one of best beauty spreads I’ve seen all year.  Did you guys peep the lace lashes in the middle photo…they are a must purchase, but where the heck will I wear them???  I can’t wait till my hair gets long enough, so I can re-create this whole look!

I’m really not sure what to make of this photo.  My style is a little out there sometimes and I’m all for people who are not afraid to be themselves when it comes to fashion, but even for me, this is a BIT much.  The obvious are the jeans, but what is going on with those sleeves.  Is there a denim jacket under the other jacket…huhhhh??  BrownFace loves you Brandy, but please don’t do this again.

Dream Dreamer

So, I’m sitting here at home.  I’ve actually been siting here since last week.  ”Why”, you ask?  I was laid off from my job.  Laid off from a job, that I wasn’t too happy with.  So why then do I feel angry about it?  Not angry because I don’t have that job, but angry because I don’t have A job.  A few months ago, I was praising God because my supervisor who worked at the organization for 32 years was laid off.  I thanked him because it could have easily been me.  But here I sit in the same position.  But shouldn’t I still be praising God because he has something better in store for me.  Shouldn’t I be praising God because he knows what’s best?  Today I sat here, watched Joel Osteen and cried trying to figure out my next steps, my goals and my talents.  I tuned into Youtube and found this video that had me more in tears.  I know I have a purpose and have been praying about my purpose for years.  I have so many talents, but a m trying to figure them out and trying to use them to the Glory of God.  I know part of my purpose is to help people is some way.  The mission of BrownFace is to Beautify, Educate and Entertain.  Three of my biggest passions in life.  Maybe me being laid off is his big REVEAL to me.  This video is helping me get thru today and I pray it will help you.  Please keep me in your prayers. The Game

So since they never ‘technically’ said that Girlfriends was cancelled (and I’m very much assuming it is), my new brown friendly show is The Game.  The first season was cute, the second season was spicy and this third season is proving to be a very emotional one.  Since I moved to Philly, I’ve been dvr’ing all my favorite shows.  Tonight, I finally got a chance to view the second episode of the season.  I thought with all the drama going on this season it would prove to be too much, but I am so drawn to all the stories.  First off, I’m surprised that Kelly is sticking to her guns and going thru with the divorce?  Jason was very annoying in the first seasons and I needed her to stand up to him, but I didn’t think it would come to this?  I’m actually starting to feel bad for him.  After the first episode aired, weren’t we all feeling Mel’s pain (trying to save face as a strong and understanding girlfriend), but dying inside.  It was so real.  I’m hoping, praying, that this baby is not his, because as much as I hate to admit it (due to his cheating ways), I love them together.  Okay, I’m sure we’ve all had grilfriends like Dionne (Mel’s enemy turned friend and roommate), but would you have forgiven her so easily? Eventhough you weren’t feeling your ex?  I dunno…there were still some boundaries crossed?  What’s up with Tasha and Rick Fox’s character?  Why haven’t we seen him yet?  What’s up with Tasha and Malik? Why is he so angry?  Is it because deep down inside he knows momma is right about his mistake of a marriage to Robin Givens’ character).  Let me know your thoughts.  Is it too much or too close to home? QVC Wants Us to Shop For A Cause

What better way to enjoy fashion and shopping, than by pairing it with a great cause.  QVC has teamed up with the Fashionable Footwear Charitable Foundation to bring us “FFANY Shoes on Sale”.  The event will be televised on October 15 from 7-10pm on QVC (check you local listings).  Shoes and boots will be half off the suggested retail price.  We really need to do all we can to kick this disease to the curb.  In the past month alone, I found out that it has struck the mother’s of two of my friends.  All net proceeds of this event will go to breast cancer research.  Let’s SHOP for a cure!  Check out QVC for more information.

Hello BrownFace Beauties and Beaus!!  I know I have been away for a minute, but God has been blessing me so much in the last month.  My husband and I just purchased our first home and I have had no time to even breathe.  WE’ve not only purhcased a new home, but it’s a new state…PENNSYLVANIA!  Look, who can afford a tiny box in New York these days??  So needless to say, September was a bust for me in regards to all things BrownFace.  Anywho, I’m baaaaack, so let’s get down to  business!

Today, I decided to stop in the neighborhood Sephora to pick up a free sample mentioned in a magazine. So, this in itself is a joke, because when I go to Sephora I can’t just go in for what I went for. After spending 55 minutes more than I wanted to and was finally about to make my purchase, the cashier reminding me of one of the most talked about mascaras to date: Diorshow Black Out Mascara. I’ve avoided the mascara for months, but today I said “what the hell.” I immediately came home to try out this famous product. I was NOT dissapointed. The product was every bit of what I heard about it. It lengthened, provided drama and volume. I’m even privy to say that it was worth every dollar of the 24 I paid for it. My MAC Zoom Lash is the only other mascara that provides this kind of ‘WOW’ factor, but it takes more coats to get there.

Yves Saint Laurent Broke Black Boundaries, says model Naomi

LONDON (AFP) — British supermodel Naomi Campbell paid a tearful tribute to French fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent on Monday for his role in promoting black models.

Campbell told Britain’s Channel 4 News that Saint Laurent, who died on Sunday of a brain tumour at his Paris home, had “done so much for people of colour.”

“My first Vogue cover ever was because of this man,” the 37-year-old told the broadcaster, referring to the fashion magazine.

“Because when I said to him ‘Yves, they won’t give me a French Vogue cover, they won’t put a black girl on the cover’ and he was like ‘I’ll take care of that,’ and he did.”

Known as the “prince of fashion” in the world’s designer capital, Saint Laurent dominated the international couture scene from the swinging 1960s until his retirement in 2002, revolutionising women’s wardrobes with a new androgynous style that mirrored women’s push for a stronger social role.

“He was the king of fashion,” Campbell said.

“He created pret-a-porter, he was the first designer to put women of colour on the runway, he was extremely important in my career, giving me one of my first jobs.”

She continued: “He has done everything, he’s done it, if you go to the museum you will see he has done it all. He has done so much for people of colour.” Taken from AFP

Why I Went Natural

The shadows are for very natural looks and so are the lipglasses. Actually, the lipglasses are my favorite products in this collection. Okay, so upon viewing this collection at the MAC Pro Store last week, there  was very a noticeable difference from Neo Sci-Fi.  The eyeshadows in this collection are highly-pigmented for the woman that loves mucho color on her lids.  Shades of green and blue eyeshadows stood out in their pots.  This collection also added some more slimshines to the mix.  So ladies, you have two very different collections.  Choices, choices.  What’s a girl to do?  Run out and buy…duh?  View Cool Heat at MAC. 

Broadway Review

Passing Strange reviewed by Blanche Mackey-Williams

Exuberantly & excellently crafted  “Passing Strange” is a dynamic rock n roll musical built on a story that is more or less about the creator, singer –songwriter  Stew’s life as a young man; Stew whose real name is Mark Stewart, is also the narrator of the play. “Passing Strange” follows the life of a African American young male (played by Daniel Breaker) living in South Central L. A. in the 70’s; in search of himself and his true identity; not the identity that most people, namely African Americans, believe he should adopt.   

The play begins with Stew’s outburst “Clap for me goddamn it, I just paid my taxes and need applause” From this derives a thunderous applause and the audience fall into an ease eagerly awaiting the show.

Three musicians emerge from the stage floor and the play begins with Stew singing “Now, since it’s my job I’m gonna set the scene / In a big two-story black middle-class dream / With all the mod cons, the manicured lawns / Some savings bonds, a boy and his mom / Talkin’ mid-seventies South Central L.A. / A colored paradise where the palm trees sway / But this promised land wasn’t delivering the goods / Even in this best of all possible hoods.”  

Eisa Davis plays Stew’s mother.  Her character exemplifies most the life of most African American mothers; she is trying to get him to attend church with her.  Her Negro mother/ holly roller dialect is familiar as we hear it from our own mothers, aunts and grandmothers who are certainly sanctified.  He ignores her and hums Buddhist chants. The same chants she wants him to give up for her lord and savior Jesus Christ.

He soon gives in and agrees to attend church with her.  However there is a turning point. At church, he finds his true love, after hearing gospel songs, “Rock & Roll.” Thus begins his quest for the “real”.

On to Europe he goes, hoping that it will help him shed his “expected identify” as a young black male. The first stop on his travels is Amsterdam.  There he is seduced by the carefree easiness of the people he meets. An immediate offer for a place to stay is delivered with a suggestive song “Keys” by actress de ‘Adre that has him drooling for more. Alas, he quickly discovers that Amsterdam, with all its tantalizing qualities and big flashy lights reminiscent of Times Square, is just not the “real” he was in search of.  Next stop is Berlin.  Everyone is militant and the revolution is what’s paramount in most people’s minds including his own as he is trying vehemently to find his “true identity.” His new radical friends are his new family, here he can play his music and be respected. All the while his mother is begging him to return home to middleclass Dom if only for a visit as she has some important news to share with him. “We have a lot to talk about” she pleads.  His vision is clouded with naïveté as he declares Berlin his home. He refuses to visit her for the holidays, claiming that anyone that is “keeping it real” is not celebrating Christmas.

Here in his new home he is a serious revolutionist “He is the black one” that has lived on the edge in the mean streets of South Central L.A. or so he would have them believe.  Ironically, the exact label he wants to escape.

Conflicts arise within him once he realizes that his new found family values everything that he now rejects as a realist radical rocker.  

He gets word that his mother has passed away. It is only then that he returns home looking for forgiveness from his mother. But it’s too late.

He now regrets denying what was always real in the first place, his mothers love. “People like me,” he says, “we feel like art is more real than life.” And that really gives you something to think about especially if you are at a funeral.  Art imitates life. However it never replaces the real thing.  See this play.

I am loving Jada’s overall look here.  She looks very well put together and that clutch is uber cute with the purple satin top.  Of course I could have done without out the belt but she still looks fab and sultry.  Can I look like this when I become a mother of two??

Is this a dress or a gaucho jumspuit?  Whatever it is, it is ultra chic.  I can just see myself wearing this towindow shop on Fifth Avenue. 

 Carol’s Daughter Rosemary Mint Shampoo – So after a church meeting one Saturday, I decided to take a trip down to Carol’s Daugher in Brookyln to try out a shampoo that one of my girlfriends was raving about.  Now, when I first went natural this was the first line I flocked to, but the products did absolutely NOTHING for my hair.  I somehow bypassed this product, because let me tell you my scalp never felt better.  The shampoo’s ingredients consist of peppermint and rosemary oils, which promote circulation and growth.  The shampoo is also good for detangling, adding moisture to the hair and taking care of an itchy scalp.  This product can be used on relaxed or natural hair.  Check it out at www.carolsdaughter.com.

Superheroes Fashion & Fantasy Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art – May 5

Earlier this month the stars showed up to support the MET’s Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy exhibit, which runs from May 1 thru September 1, 2008.   I’m not really into art in the traditional sense, but I am into fashion (which in itself is a form of art).  Here are the BrownFaces that I think KILLED it with their red carpet looks.

I love that Kimora Lee had some fun with this bold, colorful look.  If there is one thing I love to see, is a BrownFace in some color, whether on the face or on the body.

Joy Bryant also worked alot of color in her dress.  I hated the hair, but appreciated the dress.  The color was less bold than Kimora’s dress, but it still makes a statement.

Last, but not least, Thandie Newton.  She looked absolutely gorgeous.  Although I ‘m not a big fan of black from head to toe, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this outfit.  Talk about fashion and fantasy. I would so love to get my hands on this to wear somewhere, someday.

 Senator Edward Brooks

Audition, which is the name of Barbara Walters’ new autobiography, was released in early May.  In the book, the award winning journalist lends six pages to an affair with an African American Senator – Senator Edward Brooks.  Her affair with this notable BrownFace man, had me wanting to learn more.

Brooke was born in Washington, D.C., USA in 1919. Upon his graduation from Howard University in 1941, he spent five years as an officer in the segregated 366th Infantry Regiment and saw combat in Italy. Following his discharge, he graduated from Boston University Law School in 1948.

The following year, he ran for a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, but lost. He then made two more tries for office, including one for secretary of state, but again fell short in both races.

He was the chairman of Finance Commission of Boston from 1961 to 1962. Brooke was elected Attorney General of Massachusetts in 1962 and re-elected in 1964. In this position, he gained a reputation as a vigorous prosecutor of organized crime, and coordinated with local police departments on the Boston strangler case.  Read the rest of his bio at Wikipedia.

Uptown Emerging Designers Market

If you haven’t passed thru Harlem NYC in a minute and you love to preview some of the hottest up and coming designers, here’s your excuse.  This two day event kicks off at the Hip Hop Culture Center on May 17, 2008.  Attendees will experience “Harlem’s newest fashion retail destination featuring a variety of cutting edge designers of apparel and accessories.”  I guess I’ll have to be in two places at once this weekend: international food AND fashion?  What more can a girl ask for! I LOVE BEAUTY!  I will spend a day roaming the streets or searching the internet  for the latest beauty products that cater to us or whatever is new an innovative (check for the BrownFace Beauty Bazarre coming April 2009).  Here are a few things I came across on my beauty field trips.

Smashbox O-Glow: Talk about innovative!!  This product is a clear blush that gives the perfect hue for your skintone.  Yeah right, you say.  Yours truly got a sample to try on my Almond colored skin.  This product was on point!!  It gave me the perfect, but oh so natural cheek color.  It’s definitely a great day product when you want to look soft and pretty, but look like you’re not trying that hard.  You can find this product at Smashbox.com or at any Sephora.

Qhemet Biologics: I’ve heard so much about this line from my napptural boards on how great this line works for those of us who have gone the natural route.  I love being natural, but the dryness of my hair is RI-DIC-U-LOUS!  Rihanna’s short, sleek, do was looking really good to me a couple of months ago, until I ordered a sample pack from Qhemet’s.  In the sample pack, came the Amla & Olive Heavy Cream, the Karkady Tea Mist, the Olive Cream Detangler and the Olive and Honey Hydrating Balm.  I’m officially in love!  My tight, kinky hair has never felt so soft?!  I mean straight out the womb soft.  I couldn’t believe it.  My two favorite products from the sample pack were the Amla & Olive Heavy Cream and the Karkady Tea Mist.  The heavy cream is great on damp hair before twisting and the mist is great for moisturizing twists, braids, puffs or afros.  I had to run out and get the full size jar of the heavy cream and the mist is on my shopping list for this week.  I am not sure how well these products will work for relaxed beauties (the heavy cream is a bit on the heavy side), but there are other products that are lighter.  I think if you are really craving moisture, especially us nappies on who suffer from dry hair, this is the line to try.  Get your sample pack today!

Bobbi Brown Foundations: I have been faithful to MAC for over 10 years, but decided to research some other lines for foundations that are more accepting of our skin tones. I found Bobbi Brown a few years ago, when me and a friend of mine were on a shopping spree (in our heads) at Bloomingdales.  I still remember when the sales woman tried on one color on both of us, but it matched both our skins so perfectly.  We didn’t purchase due to the price tag, but I believe now that their foundations are worth it.  I recently picked up their oil free compact foundation for a bridal showcase earlier this year and my skin never looked so perfect and the oil free liquid foundation with spf 15, is perfect for a natural day look.  Although I ABSOLUTELY adore MAC, I don’t think they have the best foundations for our various skin tones. If you want a close to perfect match, I would suggest swinging by Bloomys, Barneys, Henri Bendel or Saks.

E.L.F. – where can you get a full make-up brush set for $12 and eyeshadows for $1? ELF Cosmetics of course.  I don’t even remember how I got to this site, but my jaw dropped open when I saw the prices for makeup.  Who knew that you didn’t have to spend $15 on one lip gloss??  With all things online, you’ll still have to pay shipping and handling costs, but to pay $5 for foundation is the best deal ever!

Dealing With Infertility

Today my good friend called to tell me what was some good news.  She was a little aprehensive about telling me, knowing that my husband and I have been dealing with infertility for a number of years.  She’s pregnant.  Please don’t get me wrong…I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY FOR HER, but I just couldn’t help but feel so very sad for myself.  It’s quite frustrating when you want something so bad, but you have no control over whether it happens or not.  It’s even more frustrating hearing your friends and family announce their pregnancy/pregnancies  God made me woman, God gave me a womb, why doesn’t it work, I always seem to ask myself .  This is where faith and praying friends come in.  I felt like crap after hearing her good news.  I felt like crap because my journey to motherhood has not been easy.  I needed to do something, so I asked some of my friends for prayer.  Sometimes you can’t or don’t even know what to do or say for yourself and the prayers that were sent back were right on target and helped me get thru the day.  I don’t think I have or will ever know how to really deal with infertility.  I take it day by day.  I’ve tried things to take my mind off of it, but there is still that empty feeling in my soul that not even shopping will fix.  Again, this is where faith, prayer and friends come in.  My faith has kept me going this long, prayer gets me thru day by day and my friends know how to say or send that perfect word.  Another thing that helps me is finding blogs or joining internet groups of women going thru the same thing.  It helps to know that I am not alone.  My doctor has warned me to stay away due to my constant question asking..  Sometimes they think I studied medicine (one doctor did ask me this) due to my now vast knowledge of everything that can go wrong with the female reproductive system.  I can’t seem to help myself sometimes.  I do believe I will be a mother one day.  I visualize how it will be when we hold our child for the first time.  And although it’s only a daydream, this gets me thru most of all.

Mojito Bridal Showcase

Last month, I had the pleasure of helping one of my good friends debut her first ever Mojito Bride Showcase.  The event was a SMASH!!!  She is one of the best Wedding Planners and Decor Specialists that I know.  She designed and produced the gift  baskets for my wedding even before she became a wedding planner.  The other great thing about this showcase was that it was the first time I got to recruit models and produce my very first fashion show!!!  It was so much fun.  Check out clips and interviews from the show on BrownFace TV.

BrownFace Beauty of The Month 

Lisa Richardson

I had the pleasure of meeting this Amsterdam beauty at my show, Soul Sessions.  She was so energetic, down to earth and oh, so talented! 

Lisa Richardson (26), the daughter of an Aruban father and a Dutch mother was born and raised in Amsterdam. Lisa is a typical autodidact when it comes to fashion. After completing a four-year make-up course at Studio Bessells (Hilversum) she worked for film and television for two years doing everything from special effects to theatre make-up, from fashion editorials to commercials.

In Richardson’s family, making your own clothes is normal. In 2007, she created her first designs because retailers were not providing what she was looking for. She then cooperated with Danaë (www.danae.info) which translated Lisa’s ideas into patterns and actually manufactured the garments.

Richardson made her début as a designer in October 2007 with a fashion show during the reopening of de Suite in Amsterdam. The name Gyasuda is her own first name. A name she changed to Lisa when she was fifteen (because Gyasuda was far too complex) and which has now made a comeback as the name of her label.

I came into 2007 thinking this was MY year and in a way it was, but God had other plans.  I learned this was my year of sowing seeds to be reaped at a later time: the right time.  So although it wasn’t as great as I had planned, I know that 2008 will be bigger and better, because I walk by faith and not by sight.  God has big plans in store for all of his BrownFace’s.  Have a safe and blessed holiday. See ya next year.

 The Knowles Know Business

Last week, one of my friends and fellow fashion fiend, sent me a link to a new clothing line by (drumroll) Tina Knowles.  I had a chance to preview Miss Tina online and on the Tyra show.  This line is much different from the glitzy fashions of House of Deréon and Deréon.  It caters to a more mature woman, but is still fashionable.  I don’t consider myself old, but the things I wore in my twenties would not fly at 31 and Miss Tina is more suited to the woman 30 and over.  Another thing that caught my ear on the Tyra show, is that sizes go up to a 24!!!!! Well, it’s about time.  The pieces are very well suited for work.  Check out Miss Tina at HSN.  Preview the line and let me know what you think.  Mrs and Miss Knowles are definitely front runners for celebrity BrownFace’s of the year.

Nappy Headed Hoes 

This Monday, marked the return of Don Imus eight months after his racist and sexist comments about the female Rutgers basketball team.   They now have decided to add two black comedians to his new cast.   

Are they trying to show us that he REALLY does like us because, LOOK he’s working with black people or are they trying camaflouge the scent of a racist? All of a sudden, Imus has pledged to use his new show to talk about race relations. 

Hmmmmm, what is going on here?  Michael Vick, is in jail, awaits trial, lost most of his endorsements and money for being involved in dog fighting? I am not a big animal lover, so I didn’t understand what all the hype was about?? 

What is this saying about America?  We value animals, more than respect of the human race?  A white man plus money equals you can do or say anything you want?  This also brings me to the ‘Can You  Blame Don Imus’ question.  In most rap songs all you hear is ‘hoe this, hoe that’.  If we are saying this about our own women, why can’t he or any other white person?  Can it be OUR fault?  Should we take some sort of responsibilty?

I saw this video by Raheem Devaugn on BET J and just thought I’d share.  Some of the most beautiful brown women I’ve ever seen grace this video and I just love the way it was done.  I was never really into his music, but I think I’ll give him another go around because of this song.  Thank the stylist gods he cut those braids off.  He kind of reminds me of an not-that-sexy D’Angelo.  Try and catch it up close and personal…WOMAN!
